Kansas City, Missouri
The enthusiasm of working on the new KCI Terminal was really brought to life listening to the stories of the lead architect for the original MCI Construction. He spoke about what a truly revolutionary project it was, as it was considered by many to be at the forefront of modern aviation, and the lasting impact it will have on our community for decades to come.
There was such delight in listening to the pride and conviction that he spoke with knowing he was instrumental in the design of a project that millions of people would utilize each year to unite with loved ones for the holidays, travel for the vital business meeting, or exploring our thriving and captivating city. At SK Design, we were thrilled to know that we could assist in carrying the torch for the next major aviation project in Kansas City, Missouri.
We hydraulically designed and provided 3D modeling for over 60,000 lineal feet of storm drainage, glycol collection, roof drainage, pavement under drainage after analyzing over 400 acres of airside drainage area meeting FAA design criteria. Fuel spills can be an environmental issue, so we integrated hydrodynamic separators to help clean stormwater heading to Berlin Reservoir and to address emergency situations.
SK also tackled the design of over 5,000 lineal feet of natural gas piping to serve the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) building to streamline airside operations. On the landside, we worked closed with KCMO Water Services Department to design nearly 3,500 lineal feet of sanitary sewer to serve Concourse A and the new parking garage, while also connecting existing sewer from Terminals B & C. It is a truly remarkable feeling to help develop the infrastructure that continues to grow the City that we love into one that continues to develop into a flagship Midwest metropolitan city.
What makes engineering so remarkable is knowing that our hard work and fortitude could one day be shared with family, friends, and colleagues to hopefully spark a passion for them to make a difference in the City that they live in. The stunning 1.5-billion-dollar single terminal airport, at just over one million square feet, will be the largest single infrastructure project in KCMO history. The lasting and profound economic impact on the region and first-class travel experience will be second to none.
The new KCI Terminal will be the front door greeting visitors into our warm and majestic city. It will also be one of our crown jewel accomplishments knowing that we can share how we were a key cog in the wheel for the development of “BuildKCI”.
