Overland Park, Kansas

The Hugh L. Libby Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) is a part of the Career and Technology neighborhood on the west side of Johnson County Community College’s campus. The total building area is 67,775 SF.

The CTEC building is conceived of as 2-bars with a link on the second floor and can be broken down into 3 major building areas: 1 – Entry/Administration, 2 – North Bar and 3 – South Bar. The new building offers labs and classrooms consisting of HVAC/Plumbing, Electrical, Automation and PLC and Industrial Electrical.

SK Design was tasked with setting the finished floor to create continuity on the existing site while also limiting impacts to existing conditions. The perimeter sidewalks were all graded and designed to meet ADA standards and large main entry plazas were designed to welcome all incoming students and faculty. The project consisted of new storm sewer, sanitary sewer, chilled water, domestic water, fire protection, fiber optic, and electrical systems. Large concrete retaining walls were also designed to limit impacts to existing facilities and address the steep existing terrain.

The design approach aimed to craft a vibrant, healthy environment that attracts students, faculty and staff while promoting productivity in learning. The result was the creation of functional, beautiful campus spaces that embody the values of JCCC and express its unique culture.
